Brenau University

The Nursing Department works with several Hall County elementary and middle schools to promote nursing as a career; and participates in the Lumpkin County High School health occupations program by serving on its advisory board and working with school nurses.

Nursing faculty also teach in the FireSpark! summer enrichment programs to promote health careers to high school students.

Health and Human Services Academy

Emory University

Partnership with Booker T. Washington High School program which promotes student participation in health and science careers by enhancing student achievement, graduation rates, and college entry.

Students have opportunities to “shadow” health professionals and to participate in internships. Teachers benefit via professional development opportunities such as workshops and internships.

Engineering Career Conference

Georgia Institute of Technology

Through the Women in Engineering program, this program intends to recruit more women to engineering fields and increase the retention of women majoring in and considering careers in the field.

Students learn about the academic requirements necessary to be successful in engineering undergraduate programs and have the opportunity to explore different areas of engineering through laboratory visits to all engineering departments. Participants are junior and senior women interested in engineering and nominated by their advanced math and science teachers.

Annual Symposium on Career Opportunities in Biomedical Sciences

Biomedical Summer Science Program

Spelman College

Partnering with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, this six-week residential program offers talented Georgia high school students an opportunity to cultivate interest in the biomedical sciences by exploring current biomedical issues while enhancing skills in critical thinking, technology, communication and math.

Applicants must be 12th-graders enrolled in a Georgia high school, have a GPA of 3.0 or greater, and have demonstrated an interest in science and math. Stipends are awarded to students accepted to the program, based on participation. Room and board are provided; travel expenses are the responsibility of the participant. Students may not participate in other summer activities or programs concurrently with the program, which runs from mid-June to late July.

Georgia Journalism Academy

A week-long summer program to give high school students an intensive, hands-on learning experience at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Students receive training in newspapers/magazines, TV broadcast, graphic design, advertising/public relations, and online media from faculty, graduate students and professional journalists. Legal and ethical issues, international communication and career aspects also are discussed.

Georgia Scholastic Press Association (GSPA)

University of Georgia

Non-profit organization devoted to assisting high school journalism programs in Georgia by encouraging production of quality publications through instruction and contests.

GSPA provides information to member staffs and teachers through a newsletter, Web site and listserv; and provides instruction through workshops, curriculum resources, critique services, and special speakers upon request. Membership is open to all Georgia middle, junior, and high schools that have school-sponsored publications, including newspapers, yearbooks, literary magazines, television/radio programs, and online media.

High School Residency Program (HSRP)

Co-sponsored by the Georgia Society of CPAs (GSCPA) and the Terry College of Business, this program encourages high school students to consider careers in accounting.
