Collaborating with DeKalb County Schools through a Transition to Teaching Federal Grant.
First year candidates holding bachelor’s degrees in fields other than education complete an initial certification program for K-5 teaching with four integrated strands of instruction (reading, math, culture, and classroom management). Second year candidates are employed as fully certified classroom teachers and the program is focused on teaching reading and math, reflection of current practice, action research for instructional improvement, and mentoring.

Participants must: obtain the equivalent of a major in the teaching field (including courses in grammar, composition, conversation, civilization and literature); complete the professional education sequence for foreign language education; demonstrate knowledge and experience in the areas of diversity and multiculturalism; demonstrate proficiency in the use of technology in the classroom; and pass the Praxis I (or provide minimum scores on the ACT, SAT, or GRE) and the Praxis II.
